Game Strategy, 9 Ball Positioning

There are some 8/9 routines that come up very often. One of those situations always bothered me. And so one day I decided to learn exactly what to do in the situation. I was having trouble predicting how the cue ball would react off the object ball and cushion when the object ball was right inside the pocket. Sometimes I would hit the cue ball very lightly, and it would go traveling to the opposite side of the table. Other times I would hit the cue ball very hard and it wouldn't go anywhere after contact with the object ball. Learning the ball speed and what the effects are off an object ball jammed in a pocket is a very important piece of knowledge to run out any table. Especially when you are up to the 8 ball.
Give yourself ball in hand for this drill and place the cue ball up against the rail.

Keeping the cue ball in a static area for the drill will help you learn the effects it will get off the object ball and cushion.

Once you are comfortable with that setup, here is another. It looks very similiar to the last drill, but be careful. Getting a setup on the 9 here requires a little diffent hit on the object ball.
Still up against the rail. Don't be afraid to experiment with a little side spin on the cue ball.

Feb 23, 2005  with the cue ball on the left hand rail use medium to light top right english, hitting the eight on the right side (cutting it)the cue ball will hit the top rail bounce hit the rail again and position yourself to take the nine into eithier the left side or the bottom left corner. try it, practice it, and master it, you will find yourself in similar situations and any billiards game out there!!!

Dec 6, 2002  On shots like these I like to get cute and use less speed but larger amounts of english, away from the pocket. Yes, it is NOT advisable, but when you are comfortable that the speed of the ball is to your liking you can get very accurate results. However, if you miscalculate ... don't expect me to cough up the stakes you had to pay. :)

» Chalk your cue well before taking any shot that requires english/side.
» Make sure that there isn't anyone behind you when you are about to take your shot.
» Stay down after the shot, you can admire your work just as well staying down as standing up.
» Don't talk, laugh or chew while taking the shot; small movements of your head could hurt your aim.
» Find a bridge you are comfortable with and stick to it. Definetly don't alternate using an open and closed bridge on each shot.
